Vision Therapy Success Stories

When patients complete their vision therapy program in Terre Haute, the changes that many experience are tremendous. Dr. Judson has asked many of her graduates to complete success stories of their journey with vision therapy to be able to share with others the successes that are possible. Please enjoy several of the success stories Dr. Judson has received over the years.

What were the primary problems/reasons you/your child were having that prompted you to visit Sports Vision Specialists?

Dr. Rutan recommended that Ben be checked out by Dr. Judson because he was having trouble reading. The Dr. felt this was due to eye problems and that Ben was probably not seeing words correctly which caused problems when he read. He was even having trouble with words that we knew Ben could easily read at times- familiar words.

Please share what improvement(s) you have noticed since you began vision therapy.

Before therapy, it took Ben forever to do homework. He read very slowly and had trouble pronouncing words. He is now able to complete assignments in half the time. It is easier for him to recognize words because he sees the words as they are written. Reading is no longer a chore.

What would you say is the biggest change or improvement in your life since you began vision therapy?

Since therapy, Ben has improved his reading ability and his reading level has greatly improved. He actually enjoys reading now. His reading test score has greatly improved. Teachers are amazed how much his reading score improved- in fact they first thought that the test score was incorrectly posted. The score was correct thanks to Vision Therapy. He now enjoys reading for fun and no longer dreads reading.

What would you tell a friend or family member about vision therapy?

Vision therapy is GREAT. What a difference it can make in a child’s life and parents lives. He does not struggle as he did before. One can only wonder how many other children really need eye/ Vision Therapy and who struggle as Ben did. This therapy can improve the quality of life, education, and confidence for children.

What were the primary problems/reasons you/your child were having that prompted you to visit our Terre Haute eye care center?

Teen was bullied in junior high school resulting in low grades, low self-esteem, and eventually depression. As a result we chose and attended counseling outside the school system. During a routine eye exam (by chance) Teen was prescribed reading glasses, and Dr. Rutan referred us to the Vision Therapy program and Dr. Judson and staff. To this point in our lives, we had never heard of this therapy.

Please share what improvement(s) you have noticed since you began vision therapy.

Improved grades through High School. Improved self-esteem. Teen is more responsible for self in decision-making, organization, and less a drama queen. Positive growth is overwhelming.

What would you say is the biggest change or improvement in your life since you began vision therapy?

Overall improvement is all areas as stated above. Additionally, honest communication with family and peers has resulted in a huge change to the maturity level of this Teen.

What would you tell a friend or family member about vision therapy?

It is a non-invasive, positive program that your child and family members will benefit from. You will see improvements and growth because the program addresses personality and learning disabilities. To provide help to our children in all areas of their lives at the youngest possible age is a must. Don’t continue searching for methods to improve your child’s behavior issues alone. The help is here.

Thank you to Dr. Rutan, Dr. Judson, and her staff members. You definitely made a difference in our Teen’s life.

– Written by Marlene, grandmother of 16 year old girl patient

Our story begins when our son, Seth, was 6 years old. During his kindergarten checkup at the family doctor, a simple eye test was performed. Much to our surprise, Seth could not see much at all out of his left eye. I left that appointment feeling horrible that I had not known that there was a problem. I was afraid that he would grow up and not be able to drive a car or do things that other boys would do.

An appointment was quickly made with a local optometrist. We were told that the muscles in Seth’s eyes were lazy, and that that was the reason he couldn’t see well. The doctor prescribed glasses and we were sent on our way.

However, a mom knows when things are not right, and I was not about to give up hope for a better answer. After Seth began wearing his glasses, he still could not see well out of that eye. I took him back to the optometrist wanting to know when he still couldn’t see well, hoping that something more would be done. But, basically I was made to feel that I was overly concerned and was offered no more help.

My husband’s nephew had been in vision therapy in prior years, so we had some knowledge of this. However, his problems were different that Seth’s, so I was unsure whether therapy would be of any help to him. After many calls and referrals, we found our way to Dr. Judson.

Dr. Judson met with Seth and performed thorough tests to determine exactly what problems were present. She found that Seth’s eye muscles were lazy and that he had some other problems as well, but she gave us HOPE.

Vision therapy sessions were scheduled and eye exercises were done at home. Progress was made more quickly than we thought possible. We were so surprised and very excited. A boy who wore glasses, and yet still could not see well out of his left eye, has now become a boy who doesn’t wear glasses at all. His reading ability has improved as well. My own fears have now vanished.

During the time Seth attended therapy, we decided to have our older daughter, Morgan, tested as well. She was having trouble copying spelling words from book to paper. She would often times read or write things in a way that made me wonder if she were dyslexic. She hated timed reading tests and didn’t do well on the as I knew was possible. She held her pencil incorrectly and gripped it tightly.

After her thorough testing, I was surprised to hear that she had many visual performance issues to deal with, and, that she too, was in need of vision therapy. It was even a bigger surprise to find out that she had been seeing double. I had no idea. Once therapy began, we began to see swift changes in her as well. Her copy work improved, her reading/comprehension was better, and the double vision was gone.

Vision therapy works- it really works! I would recommend it to anyone without hesitation. I thank God for bringing Dr. Judson along out path.

What were the primary problems/reasons you/your child were having that prompted you to visit Dr. Judson‘s office?

The problems I was having were my eyes weren’t focusing or concentrating on what I was trying to read and all this added up to bad grades. I also could not see the writing on the chalkboard.

Please share what improvement(s) you have noticed since you began vision therapy.

Since vision therapy is over, the improvements I’ve made were my eyes could focus together like normal. I was making excellent grades! I could finally see the chalkboard and writing!

What would you tell a friend or family member about vision therapy?

I would tell my friend or family member that they will help you succeed in what you need help in. They will not let you fail; they’ll go until you got what you need. I am thankful for vision therapy because they helped me through a lot!

– Written by patient Corrina—13 year old girl

In the summer of 2004, I noticed problems with my eyes. They were tired and achy, and I would get frequent headaches. I was due for a yearly eye exam in the fall and just thought I needed reading glasses. The eye pain became intense and the headaches lead to migraines. When I went for my vision screening, I was told that my eyesight was fine and there was not a need for me to have glasses. Throughout the course of the next three months, I visited four more doctors and had numerous tests run. With each visit I told them I felt it had something to do with my eyes, but they did not seem to listen. Frustrated, I went back to my eye doctor. She spent time with me and finally sound out that, although my eyesight is fine, my eyes did not work together and I had poor focusing ability. I wore prism glasses for about eight months, but my condition worsened. On my next check-up, she told me about vision therapy and referred me to Dr. Judson.

I started working with Dr. Judson and Rhonda in November of 2006. By Christmas, I was pain free and was no longer wearing the prism glasses. I was amazed at how quickly I saw a difference in my eyes. I truly enjoyed the vision therapy sessions, and the at-home therapy exercises fit nicely into my daily routine.

Throughout this whole process, I have been thoroughly impressed by Dr. Judson, Rhonda, and the vision therapy. First of all, it was a relief to finally find someone who understood what I was going through and validated the pain and difficulties I was experiencing. Dr. Judson took the time to listen to me and answer all of my questions. Secondly, Rhonda worked hard to make the therapy sessions fit into my schedule. The sessions were enjoyable not like work at all. The exercises were fun and taught me how my eyes, brain, and body all have to work together. Finally, as a second grade teacher, I have developed a deeper understanding for the way my students learn in the classroom. By experiencing vision therapy and attending some of Dr. Judson’s evening workshops, I gained information and insight that will help me in my classroom on a daily basis. (This is information that I never learned through undergraduate and graduate college courses and 16 years of teaching) I now “see” some different ways that students learn.

Dr. Judson, Rhonda, and vision therapy changed my personal life by relieving me of headaches and eye discomfort, They also changed my professional life my sharing knowledge with me that will help me teach my students better.

I cannot believe the transformation that I have witnessed in my daughter since beginning vision therapy. She has gone from being an extremely shy and confused child to an outgoing and intelligent young lady. She is so much more confident and has little problem understanding grade level concepts. She was tested upon entering first grade and received a below kindergarten result. She is now in second grade and is testing at almost a fourth grade reading level. I could not be more pleased with her therapist and her vision doctor. Also, I have noticed a big difference in her eye to hand coordination. She also gets carsickness less, and is not terrified to ride on the school bus occasionally. My only regret with Kayln is that we would have found and Dr. Judson sooner and could have avoided ADD meds and delaying her progress.

Thanks so much,

Laurie

Dear Dr. Judson,

My life has changed so much since I stared vision therapy. When I was in first grade I had problems seeing the words that I was supposed to read, and now I can see them. I also had trouble with seeing the spaces in the books, but now I can see the spaces too. I was also afraid to raise my hand to ask questions in first grade, and now I talk a lot in class. I even give the answers sometimes. Before I started vision therapy I couldn’t roller skate because people were flying by me and I couldn’t see. Now I love to roller skate and because of my vision therapy I have been able to move from learning disability classes to regular classes. I am also getting really good at jumping rope. Thanks for helping me to see better.

Sincerely,

Kayln

Dear Dr. Judson, Rhonda, and staff,

Thanks for helping Shelby with Vision Therapy. Before coming here we didn’t know we could get help with her eyesight. We have noticed several changes with Shelby such as increased confidence, not as clumsy, and she is not writing up hill (which she used to get very frustrated with). Her aiming abilities has increased greatly also. Hopefully, we will see more changes as time progresses, especially with her eyesight not progressing so fast. We can’t wait for future eye checkups to see. Thanks for all you have done for Shelby and her family. She said she’s going to miss coming every week!!

Sincerely,

Rosemary

Ashley was having problems in reading class. No matter how hard she studied, she was getting low grades. Ashley has worn glasses since she was 6 years old. However, her eyesight was never 20/20. The best we could correct her vision was 20/40. We took Ashley to Riley Hospital for Children. They said there was a defect in her vision, but they did not correct it. They did not feel the problem was big enough to cause a problem. Ashley’s grades continued to fall.

Please share what improvement(s) you have noticed since you began vision therapy.
